There is something magical about Iceland. Its natural wonders really are unbeatable, but there is an incredible beauty to be discovered in its cities too.

In recent years, Reykjavik, Iceland's capital, has overgone profound changes and is almost unrecognizable. Now, it is bustling with energy, offering great museums, delicious cafes, and exciting activities for travelers of all ages and interests.

Before heading on further adventures in Iceland, there is no doubt Reykjavik should be on your itinerary. We've created a list of five awesome things to do in Iceland's beautiful capital.

Try Icelandic hot dogs

Did you know that hot dogs are considered to be the National Food of Iceland? Icelanders really are fans of their hotdogs, and while you are exploring the stunning country, you must try them too!

Although you can find the yummy snack all around Reykjavik, the best one can be sampled at Baejarins Beztu Pylsur. From the outside, it may not look like something much, but don't judge the book by its cover. The hot dog stand near the harbor will take your taste buds to heaven.

Our tip – choose the hot dog by the name 'the work'. It features fried and raw onion, sweet mustard, ketchup, and a mayonnaise-like sauce with relish. You won't regret it!

Visit the Hallgrimskirkja Church

Even if you have never been to Iceland, you have probably seen photos of the iconic Hallgrimskirkja Church. The unique architectural masterpiece is one of the most important buildings in the city, and it is even more impressive in real life than in photos.

A highlight of the church is its 74-meter tower. Those who aren't afraid of heights may take up the challenge and go up to enjoy 360-degree views of Reykjavik. An interesting fact about the building is the fact it is dedicated to the Icelandic poet Hallgrimur Petursson.

Keep in mind that the service takes place on Sunday, so it may not be accessible for visitors (unless you want to participate).

See the Harpa Concert Hall & Conference Center

Another undeniable architectural masterpiece in Reykjavik is the Harpa Concert Hall & Conference Center, which is set by the Old Harbor. Although the building is only a bit more than ten years old, it has quickly become one of the most iconic and loved parts of the city.

What makes the concert hall so unique is the fact it is made of glass that changes its color depending on the lighting. If you visit Harpa a couple of times, you will be surprised to see how different it may look. There is a reason the impressive building has won several architectural awards – it really is jaw-dropping.

Within Harpa, you will also find a delicious restaurant La Primavera. Make sure to check the events calendar – if you are lucky – you might even catch a performance.

Taste fermented shark meat

It is not as bad as it sounds. Or maybe it is. Either way – tasting fermented shark meat is an experience you won't ever forget. Once you come to Iceland, you will realize that the locals have quite interesting traditional food. On the island, getting food used to be a challenge, so people had to eat whatever they could find, like fresh Greenland sharks.

As you may know, shark meat is typically poisonous. However, when you ferment it for a couple of weeks, the meat is not dangerous anymore. Hakerl (the traditional dish) can be found in most local cafes, so trying it has become a loved activity for many travelers.

The perfect drink to accompany the unique-tasting meal is Bennivin or 'burning wine'– Iceland's traditional distilled beverage.

Learn more about Iceland at Perlan

Reykjavik is home to many great museums, but Perlan, Wonders of Iceland, is definitely one you shouldn't miss. Although it is set a bit outside the city, the ride is well worth it. Standing on the highest hill in Reykjavik, Perlan is the perfect destination for nature lovers as it focuses on Iceland's natural wonders.

At the museum, you can enjoy a lovely Northern Lights show, explore a real ice tunnel and learn more about volcanoes and Iceland's nature. Another great thing about Perlan is its viewing platform, which offers incredible vistas of Reykjavik. So if you are planning a visit to Iceland in winter when there is not much daylight, this is an excellent stop to include in your itinerary. Plus – the kids will love it too!

Reykjavik is the most northern capital city in the world, and it is certainly a place unlike any other. The overall relaxing atmosphere makes it a fantastic destination for a carefree getaway. Explore it the old-fashioned way, with your legs, and see the magic for yourself! Be careful – you won't want to leave!
