A night with reindeer in Kuusamo, Finland

“More and more often we get requests about spending a night outdoors at the reindeer farm, as close as possible to the reindeer. We have taken this wish to our hearts and can soon take guests to spend a night in a very comfortable panoramic villa in our reindeer corral, just next to the reindeer.” says Mika Lappalainen, Palosaari Reindeer and Fishing Ranch.

Experiential accommodation is a highlight offered in Lapland, one can sleep in glass-igloos, glamping sites and panoramic huts in the midst of untouched nature. Reindeer are a natural part of Lappish nature and with a bit of luck they might be sighted from these special accommodations. Further, reindeer are peaceful arctic animals who are happy to include friendly visitors to their herd.

“Reindeer have a very special energy around them, like an ancient calmness of nature. When you spend some time with them in their home, your automatically feel the calmness and are ready lay your daily thoughts aside for a while.” continues Satu Palosaari.

Satu and Mika have been looking for a perfect little cabin, a nook,to place in the reindeer corralto welcome overnighting guests. The high-standard panoramic villa fills all the requirements and will be introduced to the reindeer during the summer and is bookable for guests from the start of the winter season 2021-22. Reindeer Nook offers comfort, stillness and traditional atmosphere in natural luxury style. The villa is equipped with solar panels, toilet, a wood heated sauna and a very comfortable bed from where you can observe the reindeer while having your evening tea and before falling asleep. “Guest comfort, reindeer friendliness and also sustainability and environmental values were our guiding stars when choosing the type of accommodation and we found a solution that ticks all the boxes!” says Satu enthusiastically.

In the morning it is time for breakfast in bed for the guests before the reindeer have their breakfast. “Guests are picked up from their Reindeer Nook to join the morning feeding routines in the corrals of the farm. This is what us reindeer herders do daily first thing, every day.” smiles Mika.

Palosaari Reindeer and Fishing Ranch will offer the Reindeer Nook as an overnight experience where one gets to know the reindeer and really spend time with them. In addition to the visit, accommodation and morning feeding routine, guests can opt for a rustically delicious dinner by the campfire of the farm’s Kammi. “We will only have one Reindeer Nook which accommodates one or two persons per night. The reindeer must feel comfortable in their domicile and therefore it is important to keep the nights as calm as possible. Further, we want to offer a truly unique and exclusive experience for our guests - we and the reindeer are here for them only while they are with us at the farm.” says Satu.
