At the heart of the Baltic States, you will find Riga – the capital city of Latvia. With so much history to uncover and stunning architecture to see, it is a destination that should be on every traveler's bucket list.
Wander around the charming streets of Old City, marvel at its Medieval churches, and try local goods at one of the biggest markets in Europe. With a plethora of activities available, you will never feel bored. And did we mention the iconic Black Balsam? A visit to Riga is worth just to sample the legendary drink.
With our help, discover ideas for your next trip to the capital of Latvia.
Admire the Art Nouveau architecture
Riga is famed for its beautiful architecture. Within the city, you can stumble upon more than 800 Art Nouveau buildings, which date back to the start of the 20th century. In fact, the capital of Riga is considered to have one of the largest collections of Art Nouveau architecture.
To enjoy the beauty – great floral reliefs, impressive sculptures, and gargoyles, head north of Old Riga. Although you can find many examples of the architecture in the area, some of the best are located on Elizabetes, Antonijas, and Alberta street.
If you have only limited time for the activity, Alberta Street is the one you should see. Purchase a cup of hot coffee at the nearby cafe Mulberry and take a walking tour!
Stop by the Riga Central Market
To get your hands on Latvian goods, plan a visit to Riga Central Market, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With up 100 000 shoppers every day, it is considered one of the biggest and most popular markets in Europe. The foodie destination can be found just south of Old Riga.
Whether you are looking for fresh fish, vegetables, fruit, dairy, or milk, here is where you will find it. Of course, the Riga Central Market is also the best place to find local specialties, like desserts made from rye bread, hemp paste, smoked eels, and so much more.
The building, which includes food stalls, was created already in the 1920s. German zeppelin hangars were turned into pavilions for the market.
See ballet at the Latvian National Opera and Ballet
While wandering around the old city, you are sure to come across the impressive building, which is home to the Latvian National Opera and Ballet. Built in 1863, the venue dates back further than the opera itself, created only in 1912.
During your travel adventure, make sure to see at least one show of Madame Butterfly or Faust or the iconic ballet Swan Lake. Keep in mind that Latvians consider seeing the ballet or opera a special occasion therefore, they dress elegantly. Don't be surprised to see women in stunning gowns and men – in fabulous smokings.
In between acts, you can enjoy local snacks and sparkling wine in the Opera's cafe.
Discover the Latvian National Art Museum
Another place that should be on your itinerary is the spectacular Latvian National Art Museum, which has recently been refurbished. If you are craving to get your daily dose of art, this is the right destination for you. Learn more about renowned Latvian artists like Art Nouveau mastermind Jānis Rozentāls, expressionist Johans Valters and realism painter Maija Tabaka.
Even those who aren't art enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the impressive museum. In fact, the building itself is considered to be a fantastic destination. Make sure to go up to the roof terrace to enjoy awe-inspiring views of Riga.
Taste Riga Black Balsam
To get a real taste of Riga, you must try its legendary Black Balsam. The recipe for the famous drink was created already in 1752. The man behind the invention is pharmacist Abraham Kunze. He thought of the Black Balsam as a restorative tonic.
Nowadays, to create the drink, 24 roots, herbs, flowers, and berries are used in the production process. The bitter but sweet liquor is usually made in oak barrels and has become one of the city's most popular souvenirs.
Those who don't enjoy the original version can sample other concoctions, including Black Balsam with blackcurrant, cherries, coffee, and lots of other things. Although you can drink Black Balsam on its own, some people like to add it to coffee, tea, and even ice cream.
If you are feeling cold (which you most likely will), Riga Black Balsam is a great option that will keep you warm.
